How to Get Yourself Published at CSULB

Written by Jakki Padilla

So, you’re new at CSU Long Beach (CSULB) and you’re either a public relations, marketer, student or communications student and don’t know what to do?

Here are some of the ways I got involved right away to make a name for myself, to help you out!

ASI Communications

Associated Student Inc. is a student-led organization on campus with a myriad of departments to choose from, if you ever need a job on campus to help pay your bills as a student. This organization has amazing mentors. If you are looking to work in a media-based career in the future, you should get a job with ASI Communications. (ASI Comms)

ASI Communications has been a great outlet for my creative impulses while learning how to navigate client and organization relationships. This job has taught me so much about consistency and the importance of meeting deadlines, and how avoiding missing deadlines can negatively impact a campaign by causing delays in other projects.

This is especially a great job if you’re also into graphic design, copy editing, writing articles, social media marketing, photography, website design/coding, event marketing and videography!

JPR Internships page

I won’t lie to you. I have yet to get an internship outside of school; however, many of my peers, coworkers, and friends outside of school utilize the Journalism & Public Relations Internships page to help them find jobs or unpaid internships to fulfill the internship credit required of students here at The Beach.

The most common ones I’ve seen peers get into are CLD PR and Ragdoll PR. However, by the Summer, I hope to get a job through this page. There are so many opportunities and open doors waiting for you on that page.

Todd Henneman, the JPR internship professor, is proactive every week on that page to make certain that students have the latest updates on careers revolving around JPR & Communications. For more information, please click on this link: FALL 2025 INTERNSHIPS.

Ask A Club/Organization to do their newsletter or run their social media

Still struggling to hear back from people who never check their emails or just generally rely on AI to sift through your perfectly curated resume? Fear no more!

Many student organizations/clubs or departments are in dire need of social media or email marketing. And guess who would be the best person for the job? You! The person who is trying to make it happen, so make it happen!

The best way to go about it is to check on CSULB’s website to see all the departments and, for lack of better words, check if they have a social media and whether or not it needs some serious work. Next, you want to contact the head of the said department

Publish a multimedia piece with the LB Current, DIG magazine or ENYE

Perhaps you’re not a journalism student, but you have a knack for writing about current events around school or in general around Long Beach and Los Angeles County. You may want to hit up CSULB’s award-winning journalism publications LB Current, DIG Magazine
